Volunteer Profile: Neha

Neha Reflects on Her Experience as a GCE Volunteer

It was a truly enriching experience. I returned home with fond memories and a newfound appreciation for the teaching profession. It was heartwarming to witness the transformation from ‘We don’t need to learn English’ to curious questions like ‘Why aren’t you coming to teach us?’ to playful invitations of ‘Let’s play team games!’

My favourite part was the love and warmth that the students showered me with. Every day, I received cheerful good mornings and cute gifts like drawings, paper boats, flowers, Indian gooseberries, and guavas.

I also cherished my walks with them. They’d run, dance, laugh, play, bicker. There was never a dull moment. They had this kind of pure, infectious joy that only children have. Often, it rubbed off on me. It was a reminder to not take myself too seriously.
They showed me hidden paths to the school and took me to the waterfall. They were kind, helpful, and full of curiosity. I miss them dearly. I know most of them by name now, and I truly hope to witness the beautiful futures they create for themselves one day.

I also miss the starry nights and breathtaking sunsets of Jwalamukhi. Every time I lay on the terrace, I saw shooting stars. I’ll always miss that.
